“We’re goin’ green”…
My title is a movie line from the ‘96 film “Twister” from the scene where Bill Paxton tells Philip Seymour Hoffman they are in excellent condition to go chase a tornado.
I always think about that movie line when I learn of more eco-friendly yarns out there….”We’re goin’ green”….meaning we’re knitting (and crocheting) with the yarns that will help the environment.
I’ve researched just a little, and I’m sure a person could really, really dig into this subject and find even more fibers than I did, but for the time being, here’s some great sites I found for the Green Yarns out there in big, big world we live in.
There’s organic wool, organic cotton, corn, milk and soysilk.
Let’s start with Blue Sky Alpacas They offer a ton of organic wools and cottons.
Go to Tree Hugger for green yarn and info about it.
Vermont Organic is a nice site to visit for their own organic wool.
The UK is green, too. Visit Cornish Organic for a Cornish wool site.
Another one in the UK is Organic Woollies .
And in Australia there is Ecoyarns for information about the organic corn fiber they offer.
Got Milk…yarn? Go to Cyarn and get learned about the milk fiber they are creating. Fasinating!
Click on Indigenous Designs . They’ve been in operation for about 10 years now, and they are dedicated to bringing the fiber art people nice organic, eco-friendly yarns and fibers.
Bamboo is another green yarn, go to Crystal Palace Yarns for a wide assortment of beautiful bamboo, bamboo-wool and bamboo-cotton yarns.
Edited: 9/7/07: Thanks to Kathy for reminding me about Southwest Trading Company they are the company that has the soysilk fibers. Tofutsies ring a bell? Go to their site and check it out. They also have bamboo, bamboo blends, corn and much more for those who are consciencious about their knitting supplies.
What’s on my needles:
I cast-on for Grace I’m making it out of a wool-cotton blend from JoJo yarns. It’s a soft pink wool with white cotton with a thread of black cotton plyed in with it. I hope to get it done by Christmas for a good friend of mine…I hope ![]()
I’m still knitting on my Jigsaw Socks for the Jigsaw-along and then I have a bamboo tank to make, about 6 pairs of socks and a couple of sweaters…. should keep me busy for quite a while.

South West Trading Company has some really luscious eco-yarns too - organic cotton, bamboo, soy, corn, milk fiber, and even shrimp and crab shell fiber (chitin)! You can find them at soysilk.com to see who sells it near you. Their Karaoke soy silk is one of my absolute favorites to knit with.
