Field Trip

Here we are at the Elephant farm in Greenbrier, AR. Our homeschool group got to pet some donkeys.

Saw some huge elephants (don’t see that everyday).

Elephant Sanctuary

More Elephant Sanctuary

We were told that these elephants are taken in from various places like zoos, circuses, private owners, etc.. We learned a little about how they are taken care of and how this place is also a training area for people who want to doctor these animals or work with them. This is the information we were given in our tour.

The highlight of the trip was of course the FREE PUPPIES at the souvenier tent. We travel twenty miles to see these exotic beasts and the biggest excitement to the kiddos were the free puppies, “Can I have one, please? THEY’RE FREE!” Yeah right. No animal is “free” after you add in the vet bills, food, and the kennel, etc., etc., maybe we’ll get a “free” doggie when the kiddos are older and can take care of it……maybe.

Unfortunately, although it calls itself a sanctuary, the facility you visited is not. It is a breeding facility that uses very cruel training methods.

There are only two accredited elephant sanctuaries in the US: The Elephant Sanctuary in Tennessee (http://www.elephants.com) and PAWS (http://www.pawsweb.org) in California. Sanctuaries do not breed their elephants and have a very different philosophy from the facility you visited.

Unfortunately, this place is NOT a sanctuary. It’s not accredited as such and has a horrible reputation. I don’t want to bash you and I’m sure you and the kids had a good time. I would just like you to be aware that all things are not as they seem. If you’d like to learn more, you can send me an e-mail. I’m not a crazy animal rights activist; I just love elephants and I hate to see them mistreated.

Wow, Lori. That must have been a shock to go to this farm, thinking it a refuge for elephants only to find it’s more of a factory production place. So sorry…

Hello, I am writing because I was doing an online search for homeschooling groups in the Greenbrier area, and found this post in this forum. My husband and I have just started homeschooling our three children, and are seeking a group to perhaps be a part of, at times ask questions to, and learn from about this new and exciting, yet nevertheless intimidating step we’re taking. If you could help us out by offering any information, we’d be most thankful. Sincerely, Tiffany and Lance May
