More About the Afterthought Heel

I really like the “Afterthought Heel” because of it’s look. It makes your socks look like they have the “Short-row” or “Wrapped heel” just like store bought socks, but the afterthought heel is so much easier to construct and I don’t get holes like I did with the short-row heel. Ms. Shaefer has a great tutorial here Note: Don’t worry that it is a “Toe-up Sock” that she teaches, because the beauty of this heel is that it can be worked toe-up or cuff-down (mine was cuff-down) and it looks just the same!
The greatest challenge with this heel is picking up the stitches from the scrap yarn, but just be patient when doing this part and you’ll be fine.
I found the easiest part of the afterthought heel was the decreasing that makes the diagnal row along the sides of the heel. You have to decrease just like you would on a toe, ie, every other round and you make your decreases at both sides of the heel until it is deep enough for you, then kitchener stitch it closed and you’re done!

It has turned out so pretty, I love them! I got the pattern for the pattern, what about the sock? I am having a hard time finding a pattern for the sock itself…I think I could make an afterthought heel…
Oh! I’m sorry, that is a basic sock pattern based on the repeats of the design. I repeated it 4x’s, so I c.o. 96sts and then did a k2,p2 pattern for the cuff. I’ll make out a pattern for you and email it to you if you want. Just let know.
That would be great! Thank you so much!!!!!
This sock is so gorgeous. Is there anyway that you could share that pattern with me?. Again, these are so pretty.
