Afterthought Heel

Here is my sock with a strand of white cotton yarn as my scrap yarn. (You can see my finger just under it).
Here is where I picked up the stitches from the scrap yarn and I am now ready to knit on my heel.
This is what the sock looked like when I was done with one side of picked up stitches (at the instep) plus three in the corner.
Here’s the other side of picked up stitches (the bottom of the foot) with three stitches picked up in the corner also.
After one round of regular knitting. (I think the sock blocker shapes the sock better so you can see what’s being made.)
Now I have decreased every other round until I have about half the original number of stitches. Then I decrease every round until the heel depth I need is achieved and on this one I just gathered the stiches together, but you can easily kitchener stitch them closed also. Edited on 2/20/07: I decided the gathered stitches weren’t nice and neat, so I ripped the heel out and did it again but this time, I kitchener stitched it closed and I’m very pleased with the result. Also, I just cast-on for my second sock.

That is BEATUTIFUL! See, I can’t do socks, but I have never tried the way you are doing your gusset there… Where did you get the pattern from?
My problem with fair isle was, I have crocheted for all but 4 years of my life, and always held the yarn in my left hand. I have had to figure out how to hold it in my right hand.
But keep stopping in, I am going to keep progress pics up!
